HELENA, MT – The Transparent Election Initiative (TEI) today announced that Pete Buttigieg has endorsed The Montana Plan, a first-in-the-nation, grassroots effort to rein in corporate political spending through Initiative I-194, a 2026 ballot measure in Montana.
As part of his endorsement, Buttigieg will travel to Butte on May 17 for a public town hall focused on the influence of money in politics and a future where government and elected leaders are more accountable to the people than to special interests. Buttigieg joins a growing, bipartisan coalition of national reform leaders backing TEI’s work in Montana.
“Americans don't have to accept a system where absurd amounts of corporate and dark money drown out their voices,” said Buttigieg. “A change to the law could ensure that elected leaders are more accountable to the people, which means a chance to finally break through and deliver on key issues from housing to health care. I'm glad to do my part to support these efforts and believe The Montana Plan could be a blueprint for how to put citizen voices, not special interests, at the center of our politics.”
TEI emphasized that Butte was chosen intentionally for the event. Few places in America better reflect the long struggle between concentrated corporate power and democratic self-government. “There is no more fitting place than Butte to have this conversation,” said Jeff Mangan, former Montana Commissioner of Political Practices and founder of the Transparent Election Initiative. “Montanans know what happens when economic power becomes political power. From the Copper Kings to the Anaconda Company, Butte has lived through what it means when elections answer to corporations instead of citizens.
“We’re excited to welcome Secretary Pete Buttigieg to Big Sky Country and to host a conversation about how Montana can lead in reshaping the future of American democracy—so it once again reflects and represents the people it’s meant to serve.”
